MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — The temperature has crawled above zero degrees at Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport.

The National Weather Service says the airport hit the zero mark around 2 p.m. on Monday, ending around 46 consecutive hours of subzero temperatures since 4 p.m. Saturday. It was still 1 above at 4 p.m.

But the wind chills remain bitterly cold with minus-17 at the airport and in the teens below across much of Minnesota. Subzero wind chills are expected to linger into the night.

Some schools that weren’t closed for Martin Luther King Day canceled or delayed the start of classes because of the bitter cold.

Forecasters expect temperatures to return to the 20s on Wednesday and say they could hit 30 on Saturday.
